    Helen Marton Block quits P&Z
    Helen Martin Block, the lone voice on the Planning and Zoning Commission expressing continuing opposition to the Westport Weston Family Y as it battled for approval of a new facility at Mahackeno, resigned from the commission last week, just two weeks after the commission voted 5-2 to approve the application. The vote climaxed the longest application ever presented in town history, and consumed seven months of meetings before the Planning and Zoning Commission.

    School board mulls budget cuts
    It was Board of Education chair Marjorie Cion who told the RTM Education Committee at its meeting last Monday night at Town Hall that she had heard the Board of Finance say there might be a $6 million shortfall in the town budget next year, so she listed ways in which the school board was looking to possibly save money.

    Westport Shaw's to close
    Shaw's Supermarket, located at 605 Post Road East, will shut its doors and leave Westport just after the year's end and is likely be replaced by The Fresh Market, an 84-store specialty grocer based in Greenboro, North Carolina.
    The shopping center in which Shaw's is located is owned by Kowalsky Real Estate. The Kowalsky's are long-time Westport residents who also own a well known construction company called Kowalsky Brothers.

    Himes ousts Shays
    Democrat Jim Himes of Greenwich will be the new U.S. Representative from the Fourth Congressional District, after ousting Republican Christopher Shays from the seat he has held for 21 years. The margin was 57 to 42 percent in the district, which covers all of Fairfield County, including the towns of Westport and Fairfield.

    Mioli, Boucher, Fawcett win
    Democrat Joseph Mioli won reelection to a third two-year term in his 136h District (Westport) seat in the state legislature in Tuesday's voting, defeating Republican Nitzy Cohen by a vote of 8,815 to 4,656.
